SES Presents Awards

August 19, 2014 – The Society for Standards Professionals (SES) presented several awards at its 63rd Annual Conference in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, August 12-13, 2014.

Kathleen (Kitty) Kono, ASTM International (retired), was awarded the Society’s highest award, the Leo B. Moore Award, in recognition of her extraordinary contributions, and distinguished service in the field of standardization.

Kitty Kono served as vice president of Global Cooperation for ASTM International from 2001 until her retirement in 2007. She is a graduate of Hollins University where she majored in Psychology. Her professional career included a broad range of responsibilities at ASTM including staff manager of ASTM technical committees, editor of ASTM’s magazine Standardization News, Executive Director of the Institute for Standards Research, and ASTM’s Washington Representative.

During her 32 years at ASTM, Kitty became well recognized for her passion and dedication. She has been an educator and advocate for the role of standards in international trade and regulation and a facilitator of networks among standards organizations worldwide particularly in developing countries. She is recognized by standards developers, users, and adopters as a spokesperson for cooperation and collaboration.

While at ASTM, Kitty joined with other U.S. based organizations and the federal government to facilitate awareness of standard-setting activities in both the domestic and global arenas. She sustained programs of technical assistance that continue to facilitate the acceptance and use of U.S. technologies in other markets. She helped develop pioneering programs such as ASTM’s Memorandum of Understanding and organized a series of four ASTM International Open Houses for the leaders of standards organizations from virtually every region of the world. Whether at regional, bilateral or other forums, she steadily supported the philosophy that standards must meet the internationally accepted principles set forth by the World Trade Organization, thereby enhancing market access for products worldwide, and promoting an improved positive impact on human health, safety and the standard of living.

In the last seven years since her retirement Kitty has become an award winning wildlife photographer. She has self-published six popular books on wildlife photography. Her work can be found at her website www.kittykono.com.”

The Leo B. Moore Award is named for the late Dr. Leo B. Moore, a Professor-Emeritus from Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management and was first given by SES in 1963 to the US Secretary of Defense, the Honorable Robert S. McNamara.

Phil J. Slaggert, Amusement Evaluation and Testing, was awarded the SES/ASTM International Robert J. Painter Memorial Award for special service and leadership within the past year in the field of standardization.

Philip Slaggert is the president of Slaggert Risk Management in Hobe Sound, Fl. Involved with F24 activities since 2003, Phil works on Subcommittee F24.60 on Special Rides and Attractions, where he serves as the secretary. In addition to his officer role on the sub-committee, Slaggert leads the Trampoline Courts Task Group.

Since 1989, Slaggert has been involved in the amusement industry. During 25 year career in the industry, Phil has worn many different hats, including: office manager, transportation manager, operations manager, general manager and vice president. Today, he continues to work in the industry as a loss control professional. He works for industry insurance carriers and private clients ensuring that both insured’s and private clients are operating according to insurability standards and prevailing industry practices. Slaggert holds numerous industry certifications related to the maintenance and inspection of amusement rides. He is a member of the National Association of Amusement Rides Safety Officials, ASTM International, International Association of Trampoline Parks, and the Outdoor Amusement Business Association.

Slaggert holds a degree from Mid-Michigan Community College, Harrison, MI.

The Robert J. Painter Memorial Award is named after Robert J. Painter, who was ASTM's Executive Secretary and Treasurer for 1952-1960 and Executive Secretary Emeritus from 1961-1965.

Teresa Ambrosius, American Petrolelum Institute, was awarded the SES/CSA Lorne K. Wagner Memorial Award. This Award is sponsored by the Canadian Standards Association and recognizes noteworthy contribution or service to the growth and development of SES.

Teresa Ambrosius has been with the American Petroleum Institute for over 18 years, for the past 10 years in the role of Editorial Manager. In this position she manages the editorial process and publishing of 60 to 70 new and revised standards annually; also publishing the addenda, errata, and Spanish language translations. She manages the outsourcers responsible for the layout, graphics, and technical editing of the standards and other publications produced by API. She manages the administrative and IT staff in the Standards Department, and is the content manager for the Standards portion of api.org. She coordinates with the Standards Associates and technical committee members to ensure accurate and timely publication of these standards and technical publications. Teresa works closely with the Legal and Publications groups at API to ensure that the IP of API standards and documents is protected and being utilized in the manner in which they were intended. She is the API representative to the ANSI IPRPC and Organization Member Forum, and works with ANSI on the administration of the ANSI/API standards.

She is currently on the Board of SES - The Society for Standards Professionals, as the Marketing Council Director; in this role, she works with all SES committees to market the programs and events such as: certification, education, webinars, membership, and the annual conference. She developed and launched a monthly “News from SES” e-mail blast, has updated the website and other marketing materials. She has also worked to strengthen the marketing relationship between ANSI and SES.

Teresa has a Bachelors degree in Communications, Public Relations from Elizabethtown College.

The SES/CSA Lorne K. Wagner Memorial Award is in memory of Lorne K. Wagner, SES President from 1989 to 1991.

Joseph Cascio, George Washington University, was awarded the grade of Honorary Life Member. This award is presented for distinction and outstanding accomplishment in the field of standardization.

Mr. Joseph Cascio is a Visiting Scholar, George Washington University, and has been an enthusiastic and dedicated advocate of voluntary standards, standardization and certification for over 25 years. As a manager within IBM Corporation, Joe began his extraordinary leadership of the U.S. TAG for ISO TC207, Environmental Management Systems, in 1993. In that position for more than 9 years, he actively recruited and led over 600 individuals from the US who participated in the TAG. His strong leadership qualities were increasingly demonstrated as the US often had to negotiate language in the development of the 14000 series standards in the face of conflict. After retiring from IBM, Joe undertook a second career with Booz-Allen and continued his work in standards on a full time basis in both domestic and international venues providing training in, and seminars on, the implementation and certification of the ISO environmental management standards (EMS). Joe is widely published on the use of standards, implementation of EMS standards, certification and accreditation related to these and other standards such as the ISO 9000 series.

The national and international community of standards professionals has long acknowledged Joe’s untiring efforts in promoting voluntary standards. This is most recently recognized by the George Washington University where, as Visiting Scholar, Joe is a leader in the newly established Energy and Environment Institute at the University. In that capacity, Joe will work to deepen and broaden the reliance on private sector standards in industry and government.

The following individuals were each designated as a Fellow of SES. This Award is presented for professional distinction in, and special contribution to, the field of standardization.

Patti Ensor, CSA Group
Patti Ensor is the Manager, Commercial Alliances for Standards at CSA Group (CSA) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. CSA has been a leader in developing standards and codes for over 90 years, publishing more than 3000 standards relating to safety, design and performance of a wide range of products and services.

Patti joined CSA in 1998 as Manager of Sales. In her current role, Patti is responsible for overseeing the establishment, management and performance of strategic partnerships that support CSA’s commercial initiatives, goals and objectives. Patti works closely with CSA resellers and spends a good deal of time managing copyright and licensing requests in order to protect CSA’s intellectual property. Patti has been a member of SES for 11 years and served on the SES Board as Marketing Council Director from 2008 to 2012. Patti currently participates as a member of the SES Conference Planning Committee and the SES Marketing Committee. Patti graduated from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Ed Mikoski, Electronic Components Industry Association
Ed Mikoski is Vice President, EIA Standards and Technology in the DC Office of the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA). In that role, he conducts, coordinates and administers standards development programs for a dozen national committees of the association and administers a dozen US Technical Advisory Groups to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for ECIA. Ed represents ECIA in an array of industry leadership events and activities. Since 2000, he has led the standards activities in several organizations, including the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), and the Electronic Components Association (ECA). Prior to association management, Ed served more than 20 years in sales, applications engineering, product distribution, marketing, and industry standards development roles within the electronics and communications industries.

Ed received his undergraduate degree in Physics from Clark University in Worcester, MA, his MBA from Averett University in Danville, VA, and is a Certified Standards Professional (CStd) conveyed by SES -The Society for Standards Professionals. A US Navy veteran, Ed served seven years as a US Naval Aviator, including deployment in one of the first Navy LAMPS helicopter detachments to Vietnam.

Since 1985, Ed has participated in, and held, numerous committee leadership positions in trade associations and standards development organizations including EIA, ECA, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), US National Committee to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and served as Chairman of the EIA Engineering Department 1992 to 1995. He received the EIA 1993 Engineering Award of Excellence and is a 2013 ANSI Meritorious Service Award recipient.

Mr. Mikoski is a past president of SES and currently serves as Treasurer. He is a board member of the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB); past board member to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI); Board Chairman of ECC Corporation; Council Member of Underwriters Laboratories Follow-Up Services Council; a founding member of the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee; Council member of the US National Committee (USNC) to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), member of the USNC/IECQ conformity assessment program, member of the USNC Conformity Assessment Policy Coordinating Committee, a Technical Working Group Chair to the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) Road Map Project and participates in multiple additional ANSI programs.

Trudie Williams, Department of Defense
Ms. Williams is a program analyst in the Defense Standardization Program Office of the US Department of Defense (DoD). She has been responsible for policies, guidance, and training in the areas of commercial and non-developmental acquisition, market research, and DoD adoption and use of non-government standards. Ms. Williams was an integral part of the SES Conference Planning Committee for several years. After serving as a member of the Conference Planning Committee, she stepped up to serve as conference chair for 2006 and 2007. For the 2008 conference, Ms. Williams served as vice chair.

Ms. Williams has been a member of SES since 1999. Trudie has served on the SES Board of Directors as Technical Council Director from 2009-2012.

Trudie is a previous winner (2008) of the SES/CSA Lorne K. Wagner Memorial Award. The SES/CSA Lorne K. Wagner Memorial Award recognizes noteworthy contribution or service to the growth and development of SES, through exceptional achievement as an SES officer, or exceptional contribution to SES by a member.
