The need to engage new and emerging professionals in standardization and conformity assessment, and maintain their long-term involvement, has been clearly identified at the US and international level. Currently, the IEC Young Professionals Programme works to engage "the world's upcoming expert engineers, technicians and managers” and provide them with opportunities to contribute in the development of international standards and conformity assessment systems in electrotechnology. In the US, a joint task force between the ANSI and the USNC to the IEC is considering the development of a national program to engage and retain emerging professionals in standardization and conformity assessment. Similar programs exist, or are under development, within IEC National Committees across the globe in various forms. This presentation will provide details of the IEC Young Professionals Programme, with a focus on the 2013 workshop, and an overview of the current activities underway across the IEC, including in the United States, regarding similar national programs.
About the Speaker:
Jonathan Colby is a Hydrodynamic Engineer with Verdant Power, a tidal energy device developer based in New York City. He has been with the company since 2006, after completing a Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. As a member of the company’s Engineering and Resource Assessment Teams, his work includes turbine blade design, hydrodynamic modeling, data processing and analysis, fieldwork, and general turbine operation responsibilities.
Colby is active on a number of national and international standards committees, currently serving as convener of the Tidal Performance Ad-hoc Group of the IEC Technical Committee for Wave, Tidal, and Other Water Current Converters (TC 114) and as the head of the US Shadow Committee on Tidal Performance. Colby is also active in the development of a conformity assessment scheme for Marine Energy at the IEC. In addition, he is involved in the development of both national and international programs for emerging professionals, among others, and was the recipient of the ANSI Next Generation award in 2012.
