 NEWS RELEASE

John Walter to Keynote at 63rd Annual SES Conference
August 11 – 14, 2014, Fairmont Château Laurier, Ottawa, Ontario Canada

SES - The Society for Standards Professionals is pleased to announce that John Walter, Chief Executive Officer of the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) will be the keynote speaker at the Annual SES Conference. The 2014 Conference, to be held August 11 – 14 at the Fairmont Château Laurier, Ottawa, Ontario Canada, will focus on the theme, Standardization & Conformity Assessment Across Borders.

In his role as Executive Officer, Mr. Walter leads the work of the SCC in promoting the efficient and effective use of standardization in Canada, with the ultimate goal of enhancing Canada's economic competitiveness and social well-being. His role is supported by a staff of some 94, and includes the implementation of strategies and policies established by SCC’s governing Council.

Mr. Walter was appointed as incoming Vice-President (Policy) of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for the 2014 – 2015 term, effective January 1, 2014. In that role he will oversee the development and approval of ISO’s next Strategic Plan 2016-2020. Prior to leading SCC, Mr. Walter was Vice President, Standards Development for the Canadian Standards Association. Previously, Mr. Walter was President and CEO of the Technical Standards & Safety Authority, a non-government, not-for-profit organization mandated to deliver public safety services for the province of Ontario.

From 1991 – 1996, he was the Assistant Deputy Minister, Technical Standards Division for the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations. Over an 18-year period with the province of Ontario, Mr. Walter held positions of increasing responsibility within the Ontario Ministry of Correctional Services. More recently, Mr. Walter received SES’ highest honor, the Leo B. Moore Award. This award is given for the highest achievement, extraordinary contribution, and distinguished service in the field of standardization. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Guelph in 1973.

SES President, Sonya Bird, commented, “I’m very excited to have such a respected keynote speaker for our 63rd annual SES conference. Sometimes, it is easy for SES to focus on standardization activities in the US, so I am looking forward to hearing about standardization north of the border. Canada, and SCC in particular, has made significant changes to its standardization system to more effectively establish standards and better utilize resources. Mr. Walter’s keynote, in conjunction with the remaining conference program speakers, will continue to carry out one of our Society’s key objectives – educating our membership in all aspects relative to the standards profession. Please join me in beautiful Ottawa this August!”
