October 2014 SES Webinar:
IEC TC114 and the IECRE System, International Standards and
Conformity Assessment Activities Relating to the Marine Energy Industry
Wednesday, October 15, 2014 from 1:00 – 2:30pm ET
About the Webinar:
The Marine Energy industry is an important, and rapidly developing, segment of the global marketplace for clean, renewable energy. Based on the emergence of the industry, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) began Technical Committee (TC) 114, “Marine energy - Wave, tidal and other water current converters” to prepare International Standards for marine energy conversion systems. In addition to the efforts underway on TC114, the IEC recently approved the creation of a new Conformity Assessment (CA) System, entitled the IEC Renewable Energy (IECRE) System. The IECRE System currently includes Solar Photovoltaic (TC82), Wind Energy (TC88) and Marine Energy (TC114) and is actively working to develop Certification Schemes for these industries. This presentation will include an overview of the Marine Energy industry as well as an update on critical activities currently underway at the IEC and within the US to develop Standards and Certification Schemes for Marine Energy and the Renewable Energy sector overall.
About the Speaker:
Jonathan Colby has been with Verdant Power, a tidal energy device developer based in New York City, since 2006 after completing a master’s degree from the College of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology with an emphasis on experimental fluid mechanics. His work includes turbine blade design, hydrodynamic modeling, data processing and analysis, fieldwork, and general turbine operation responsibilities, as well as environmental monitoring of native fish and bird species, among others, to assist in federal permitting and licensing. He is a recognized leader on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Technical Committee for Wave, Tidal, and Other Water Current Converters (TC 114) developing International Standards and active on the IEC Conformity Assessment Board (CAB) supporting the creation of a Conformity Assessment System for the Renewable Energy industry, including the Marine Energy sector. He was elected as an IEC Young Professional Leader in 2011 and was the recipient of the ANSI Next Generation award in 2012.
