About the Webinar:

For the last twenty years, open source projects and open source standards organizations have operated in parallel, with little contact between them. Recently, the evolution of open source development is having a profound impact on the way major vendors solve interoperability problems. Under this  approach, companies come together to create an open software system that solves a central problem, rather than creating standards where separate solutions to the same problem interoperate with each other. In so doing, the need for standards can be significantly diminished (although not eliminated entirely). One among many current examples is the AllSeen Alliance’s interoperable peer connectivity and communications framework to enable the Internet of Things. In this webinar, attendees will learn how this is accomplished, and what it may mean to their own standards goals and strategies.

LEVEL:  Intermediate

About the Speaker:

Andrew Updegrove is a founding partner of Gesmer Updegrove LLP, a Boston-based technology law firm.  He has a broad range of experience in representing both mature and emerging high technology companies of all types in all aspects of their legal affairs.  Since 1988, he has also represented and helped structure more than 135 worldwide standard setting, open source, research and development, promotional and advocacy consortia.  In May 2002, he conceived and launched ConsortiumInfo.org, a website intended to provide the most comprehensive and detailed source of news and information on standard-setting and forming and maintaining consortia.

In 2004 Updegrove was the sole representative of the consortium community appointed as a member of the US National Standards Strategy Committee.  In 2005 he was elected to the Board of Directors of ANSI and the Free Standards Group (FSG), and in 2007 to the Board of Directors of the Linux Foundation.  He is a past member of the Board of Advisors of HL7, current Board of Advisors member of Open Source for America, charter Fellow of the Open Forum Academy, and appointed to a National Academies of Science Committee commissioned by the US Patent and Trademark Office to advise on intellectual property policies around the world.  Updegrove is a graduate of Yale University and the Cornell University Law School.  He is a certified mediator, and a member of the Panel of Mediators of the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council.
