The competition is sponsored by the SES - The Society for Standards Professionals and the US World Standards Day Planning Committee. Paper competition winners will be given their awards at the US celebration of World Standards Day, which will be held this year on October 3, 2013, at the Fairmont Hotel in Washington, D.C. The winning papers will be published in SES’s journal, Standards Engineering.

The theme for this year’s paper competition “Standards for a World at Work and Play,” recognizes standards as tools that assure repeatability, consistency, dependability and excellence.  It identifies standards-setting bodies as the forums for the public and private sectors to come together in collaboration for a common good.  And it confirms that--from farm to table, manufacturer to retailer, and workplace to home--standards bring confidence and countless benefits to business, governments and consumers.

Standards are the foundation upon which developing nations build their economies in the global marketplace...facilitate technological innovations...and foster evolving social and environmental compliance practices that assure the safety of workers and health of the world and its citizens.  Inherently, standards distill state-of-the-art expertise into practical, globally relevant tools for tracking global challenges.

Standards evolve to meet the changing needs of a world at work and play.
